Abstract
Wahyuni, Anisya Fatul. 2022. The Incorrect Use of Prepositions and Articles Made by The Students of Man 4 Kediri In Writing Thesis. Department of English Language Education, Faculty of Tarbiyah. State Islamic Institute of Kediri (IAIN Kediri). Advisor (I) Dr. Mukhammad Abdullah.M.Ag(II) Dr. Toyyibah, SS, M.Pd Keywords: Preposition, Article, Error Analysis, Descriptive Text. Lots of studies related to the use of correct grammar by EFL learners showed that there were lots of mistakes were found in EFL learners’ writing. Grammar covers some important aspects of language such as, irregular verbs, singular or plural form, prepositions, articles, tenses, etc. as a small aspect, preposition and article seem do not have an important role in a language. Indeed, both of articles and prepositions are as important as other aspect in a language to construct a good sentence. Prepositions and articles are often become a problem faced by EFL learner because they often make mistakes. Based on the statement above, the researcher considered that the use of preposition and article by Indonesian EFL learners was important enough to be analyzed. The aims of the research were to find: 1. What types of errors did Indonesian EFL learners make in using prepositions and articles in their writing at MAN 4 Kediri?, and 2. Why do students at MAN 4 Kediri often make errors in using prepositions and articles in their writing? The research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. In this study, the incorrect of prepositions and articles made by EFL learners will be the focus of the study. The researcher use a writing test and an interview. The students write a descriptive text about the topic given by the researcher for the test. After collecting the data, the researcher analyzes it by using Surface Strategy Taxonomy. Learners can omit or add items, and learners can misform and misorder items. It was a brief overview of Surface Strategy Taxonomy. The fifty descriptive texts produced by eleventh grade students of XI-IBB and XI-IIS 2 of MAN 4 Kediri in the academic year of 2021/2022 be the data source of this study. The researcher conducted interviews with students from XI-IBB and XI-IIS 2 MAN 4 Kediri. The researcher knew the causes of students' errors in using prepositions in descriptive text after collecting data from interviews. Data was collected during observation and research. This study was carried out in MarchMei 2022. The finding shows that the eleventh grade students in class XI-IBB and XI-IIS 2 still made some errors in their writing. The total number of error were found by the researcher is 198. Besides that, it was found that the dominant type of error is addition of preposition error which has 32 errors. While, the articles error of omission became a dominant errors in 82 errors. The addition of preposition errors and omission of article errors becomes the highest number of errors made by the students. Meanwhile after analyzing the data, the researcher finds three sources of errors which cause the students’ errors includes interlingual, intralingual, and communicative strategies. Students’ interlingual errors were caused by the interlingual inference from the native language. While, students intralingual error is caused of the ignorance structure of the mother tongue. In other hand, students did mistakes cause of their lack of communication strategies because they were hard to transfer idea by using English sentence.
