Abstract
Essay Writing is one of the creation that aims to improve students' ability in academic writing using English. Although the expected writings are short essays, students are able to apply the knowledge gained in this course to other academic writings. Therefore, this course is one of the subjects imposed by students. This study aimed to know the students’ ability in essay writing and to know the students’ problems in essay writing faced by the third-semester students of English Department of IAIN Kediri in the academic year of 2021/2022. The current research was a qualitative study with the subject of one class (Class C) of the third semester students of English Department of IAIN Kediri. This class consists of 30 Students. The data were collected from the results of tests given by lecturers to students. The data were analyzed using the scoring rubric, defining second analyst, classifying the problems’ category, computing the data, and drawing conclusion. To compute the result of students writing, the researcher used Brown and Bailey's analytical scoring (2004:244). The result of this research shows that the mean scores of the students in by the third-semester students of English Department if IAIN Kediri is 61.77. It means that the students were on fair level. The interval score of fair level is 59-73. The research findings also showed that the students still have problems in essay writing. The percentage of students problem in aspect of organization (18.80%), content (18.80%), grammar (21.05%), mechanics (21.80%) and vocabulary (19.55%). Referring to these results, lecturers should give more explanation and exercise on mechanics such as the use of English writing conventions and grammar, especially in essay writing. Therefore, students can improve their writing skills with good and correct grammar. To support this, students should also practice writing more to improve their writing skills, especially in essays and should have motivation in learning English.
