Nisyak, Ana, Choirun. 2022. Error Analysis On The Use Of Simple Past Tense In Recount Text In Instagram Caption By The VIII A Students At Mtsn 1 Nganjuk in the academic year 2021-2022. Thesis, English Department, Faculty of Education, Institute of Islamic Studies at Kediri, Advisor: (1) Nur Afifi M. App.Ling, Ph.D. (2) Drs. Agus Edi Winarto, M.Pd., M.H. Keyword: Error Analysis, Simple Past, Recount Text, Instagram Caption. English is a foreign language that has 4 aspects, namely speaking, writing, listening, and reading. Furthermore writing is one of the most complicated skills for junior high school students. It is because to make good sentences, students should understand well all of the details of tenses, especially the role and function of simple past. Whereas some students still make some errors in writing recount text. Because of that , the purpose of this research is to find out what types of errors are most often made by students in using the simple past in recount text and to find out what strategies the teacher did to overcome errors made by students in using the simple past. This study used a qualitative descriptive research design. The subjects of this study were students of Class VIII A MTsN 1 Nganjuk, totaling 30 students. In conducting this study, the data was collected from student’s writing that uploaded on Instagram caption. Then identified, classified, calculated, analyzed, and described the errors. And researcher conducted interviews with 2 English teachers to find out strategies to overcome students error in the used simple past. In the result found 142 errors from 30 students' writing. The researcher found the highest level of error is in misinformation, the number of error is 92 items (65%). The second place is error of omission with the number error is 36 items (25%). The third place is error of addition with the number error is 13 items (9%), and the lowest level is error of misordering with of error is I item (1%). The solutions are to provide speaking and writing exercises to familiarize students with the simple past, this exercise is done continueusly until students really understand, provide an in-depth explanation of the material, and the final solution is to form group discussion, so that students can share understanding in using the simple past.
