Abstract

Amilia, Dinda Zakiatul. 2022. A Study of Apology Strategy Performed by Males and Females of English Department Students of IAIN Kediri. Department of English Language education, Faculty of Tarbiyah, State Islamic Institute (IAIN) Kediri. Advisors: Dr. Toyyibah, M. Pd., and Fitriatul Masitoh, S.S., M. Pd. Keywords: Apology Strategy, Gender, English Department Students Knowledge of linguistic rules is complemented by the capability to use the language appropriately in specific situations. Through communication, a person may develop good lexica-grammatical knowledge of the language. There are connections between apologies and speaker needs, power relationships, and social distance. When apologizing, a person must take action in order to establish a connection and understand how the apology recipient will react. By taking an action, the interlocutor and the offender will be able to reestablish their relationship. The purposes of this study were to examine the apology strategies used by English Department students and to find whether there was any difference of gender on the use of apology strategy employed by the English Department Students of IAIN Kediri Quantitative research was approached to answer the research problems. A survey research was designed to achieve the objectives. The research took place exactly in the English department of IAIN Kediri in the academic year of 2021/2022. 24 students of the fifth semester students were the participants of the research. The present study utilized a modified version of the 'Discourse Completion Task' (DCT) from the Cross-Cultural Speech Act Realization Project (CCSARP) (Blum-Kulka, 1984).The instructions were provided in English and then spread by Google-Form. The data were classified based on Cohen and Olshtain’s model. Then, the researcher counted the frequency of each type of apology strategies and converted it into percentage to know the differences between male and female EFL learners in term of the use of apology strategies. The finding revealed that the most favored applied apology strategy by male and female department students at IAIN Kediri is Expressing of Apology. Some also employed the strategy of Explaining Account (21.7%), Minimizing Offences (20%), Acknowledging Responsibility (17.5%), Offering Repair (9.5%), and Finally, Promises and Forbearance (2.4%) to ask for apology from interlocutors. However, two types of apologies, the strategy of rejecting and expressing concern, were not considered by the students when they asked for an apology. The findings of the study also revealed that gender did not greatly affect the use of strategy of apology. Although males and females used some similar strategies, they did so in a different order. It was noted that male English department students were more likely to use Expression of Apology than female students.
