Abstract

This research discussed the Speech Act President Joe Biden's speech in White House, USA, which aimed to find out the kinds of communication functions in the illocutionary act and to identify the effects contained in the speech. This research focused on John Searle‘s theory about pragmatic, especially in the speech act. This research was conducted to find out the kinds of communication functions in the illocutionary act and perlocutionary act. This research was conducted in order to explore types of illocutionary act and perlocutionary act based on theory proposed by Jhon Searle. The data were analyzed using the descriptive qualitative method by applying note-taking as the instrument to find out the valid data. There are several steps to analyze the data. First, the researcher observed the data by watching the video from YouTube and collected the speech from nbcnews.com. After that, the researcher classified data based on 5 types of illocutionary act (assertive, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative). And the last step is the researcher try to find the hidden meaning behind the utterance in the speech. The finding showed that the kinds of communication functions in the illocutionary act and perlocutionary act, there were 18 or 45% assertives (boast, assert, claim, state, diagnose complain, and conclude.),6 or 15% directives(commands, orders, advice, suggest, and request),5 or 13% expressives(thanks,and feeling), 9 or 23% commisives (promising), and declarations 1 or 3% (declaration ). Then in the perlocutionary act, it is also found 7 point expected responses from the speaker to audience. President Joe Biden says about effect of coronavirus-19 and the data of victims who died from the corona virus. Then, the speaker give some motivate to the audience so the audience can throuh this pendemic with succesfull.Meanwhile, in the perlocutionary act in his speech, effective and got responses from the audience after listening to the speech of President Joe Biden in the White House, USA.
