Abstract
Language is used as a tool of communication with other people around. One way to make the communication running well is the participants in the speech event understand the context and meaning of their utterances. The study about the meaning of utterances and its context is called pragmatics. One aspect which is studied in pragmatics is deixis. This study aimed to identify the types of deixis, and the reference meaning of each deictis words which is used in the song lyrics of Westlife’s Where We Are album (2009) based on Alan Cruse theory. This study use descriptive qualitative method as the research design to analyze the types of deixis and the reference meaning of each deictic words in the song lyrics of Westlife’s Where We Are album (2009). There are thirteen songs in Where We Are album which is used as the data source of this study. To collect the data, the researcher followed some steps which are: 1) listen to all songs in Where We Are album, 2) search the song lyrics on the internet, and 3) mark the deictic words. To analyze the data, the researcher classify the deictic words based on the types of deixis, then interpreting the reference meaning of each deictic words. The result of this study showed that in the thirteen songs of Westlife’s Where We Are album, the researcher found the deictic words which are categorized into person deixis, spatial deixis, temporal deixis, social deixis, and discourse deixis. From thirteen song lyrics, there are 13 deictic words that indicate about person deixis (7 first person, 3 second person, 3 third person), 20 deictic words that indicate about spatial deixis (2 proximal term, 2 distal term, 16 specific location), 82 deictic words that indicate about temporal deixis (17 specific time, 65 verb tense), 3 deictic words that indicate about social deixis, and 2 deictic words that indicate about discourse deixis. Based on the findings, person deictic words refer to the speaker, the addressee, and also other significant participants (third person), spatial deictic words refer to the location which (near, far, and specific location) relative to the speaker, temporal deictic words refer to the specific time and verb tense that indicate the time of event, social deictic words refer to the intimacy between the speaker and the addressee, and dicourse deictic words refer to the use of that to point to a previously occurring item and this to point something which is still to come.
