Abstract

This thesis aims to find out the translation strategies of idiomatic expressions found in the movie script of Contagion Movie. The data is English in the source language and Indonesian in target language to be analyzed. This research used descriptive qualitative method in analyzing and describing the idiomatic translation that are used in the subtitle of Contagion Movie. The researcher analyzed the data by following some steps, first was collecting the data, second was identifying the data, the third was analyzing the data, the fourth was describing the data, and the last was drawing the conclusion. Based on the analysis, the researcher found 82 idiomatic expressions in the movie script of Contagion Movie that contains four strategies in translating idiomatic expression based on Mona Baker’s theory. From the analysis, the results are there is no idiom using similar meaning and form strategy, 18 idioms using similar meaning but dissimilar form strategy, 48 idioms using translation by paraphrased strategy, and 7 idioms using translation by omission strategy. The most dominant strategy used in translating the idiomatic expressions is translation by paraphrased. From the 82 data, there 24 idioms translation is formal-equivalence translation, and 58 idioms are dynamic-equivalence translation. The translation equivalence is based on the Nida and Taber’s theory
