Abstract
The use of good communication strategy in learning is one of aspect which create pleasant atmosphere in the classrooms. The information that teachers’ and students’ intention is surely understood by both of them. It often occurs in the language classrooms, especially foreign language (English). Thus, code alternation is considered necessary in teaching and learning process. But, some of people argued that the use of code alternation in the classrooms will debilitate to their English. From this reason, the researcher investigates the students’ and teachers’ perception on the use of code alternation in English Department, STAIN Kediri. The study further explores the perception of the students on the effects of their main (Indonesian) and foreign (English), affective support, and learning success. While for the teachers, the researcher investigates their reasons of the use of code alternation and also their perception in the practice of code alternation in the classrooms. This study is kind of descriptive quantitative approaches and uses survey research design. 100 English department students on sixth semester and 14 teachers who teach in English are involved in this study. The researcher uses questionnaire to get the data from the participants. The result of the study reveals that both students and teachers have good perception on the use of code alternation in the classrooms. The use of code alternation makes the students have positif impact both emotion and comprehension. And it is not too influential on their main and foreign language. While the teachers use code alternation for many reasons which require them to use it. Mostly teachers have good perception on the practice of code alternation in the classrooms. The next researcher should help identify the correct level of utilising code alternation in classrooms to promote the advancement of classroom teaching and learning.
