Abstract
The thesis discussed illocutionary act in Barack Obama’s Speech at Benjamin Banneker Academic High School Washington, D.C. Illocutionary act is part of speech act which studies about speaker intended meaning in their utterance. Every utterance from the people always has meaning beside their utterances. There are two objective studies in this research: first, to find types of illocutionary act in Barack Obama’s speech and second, to find functions of illocutionary act in Barack Obama’s speech. This research adopts a descriptive qualitative method. The researcher conduct the research in Barack Obama’s speech at Benjamin Banneker Academic High School, Washington D.C. This speech did in 2016, this speech taken from internet media as the field of data source. The researcher uses two theories to classify and analyze the utterances. First, the theory from Searle (1979) about types of illocutionary act, such as: assertive, comissive, directive, declaration, and expressive. Second, the theory from Leech (1993) about functions of illocutionary act, there are four functions, such as: competitive, convivial, collaborative, and conflictive function. The result of the research showed that there are 135 (100%) utterances produced. There are five types of illocutionary act used by Barack Obama, they are: assertive, comissive, directive, declaration, and expressive. The dominant types from this research is assertive with 94 (69,6%) utterances, the purpose of assertive types are to give the information, this speech has the purpose to give information to the students and the low types is declaration with 2 (1,48%) utterances. In addition, there are three functions found in this research, such as: competitive, convivial, and collaborative function. In this research, the researcher did not find conflictive function, because the speech has the purpose to give information for the students. And the dominant function of illocutionary act in this research is collaborative function with 101 (74,8%) utterances, the purpose of collaborative functions are to give assert, report, inform, etc to the listener, and the low function is convivial function with 8 (5,9%) utterances, this function has the purpose to compliance with the social purpose, the categories of this functions are thanking, intending, etc.
