Abstract
Writing is a crucial component of language performance. This skill is the most difficult skill in basis for communicating clear thinking, but it is difficult process even in the first language. Therefore, the learners of English as a foreign language tend to make errors in writing. In assisting the learners to successfully acquire foreign language writing skill is necessary. This research aimed to investigate the correlation between L1 writing skills and L2 writing skill. This study concerns for English Department students of STAIN Kediri in forth semester because they need this skill in their academic life. To this aim, thirty students were asked to write on the free topic comparative and contrast essay. Subsequently, the compositions were evaluated based on Jacob Composition Profile. Then, the Pearson product-moment correlation was calculated to examine the correlation between L1 writing skills and L2 writing skill. Besides that, the researcher attempted to get deeper insight of the students’ writing by comparing the data and anlyed it by using Microsoft excel 2007. The result of the analysis and statistical calculation, it was found that rxy was 0.278 and rt was 0.361 and 0.463. By comparing the values of rxy and rt it can be got that rxy is lower than rt and the statistic hypothesis claimed that Ha cannot be accepted. Therefore, study showed that the significant of correlation between L1 (Bahasa Indonesia) writing skill and L2 (English) writing skill was low. It indicates that the students use of their L1 as a tool to facilitate their writing L2 writing process. Meanwhile, the used of L1 as the tool of transfering other language, It can be caused interference in L2 learner when writing in English, which was often due to the fact that there is a linguistic transference from the native to the target language. These finding entail some pedagogical implications for effective language teaching in L2 writing classes. The teacher should pay attention to the influence of learners’ native language.
