Abstract

ABSTRACT Sari, Laila Kartika. 2020. The Interference of Javanese Accent Toward Students’ Pronunciation on English Fricative Dental Consonant at Sman 1 Plemahan. Advisor:1) Dr. Ary Setya B. N., M.Pd. 2) Fitriatul Masitoh, M. Pd. Key words: interference, javanese accent, fricative dental consonant. This thesis is mainly aimed to analyze Javanese accent interference in students’ English pronunciation on fricative dental consonant. This thesis is qualitative research. The aims of this study are to describe Javanese accent interference in Students’ English pronunciation (fricative dental consonant) and to describe the application of Javanese accent interference in Students’ English pronunciation at the XI Alam 5 in SMAN 1 in the academic year of 2019/2020. In collecting the data, the researcher uses interview and documentation as an instrument. This thesis uses descriptive qualitative research or basic intent as the research design. The subject of the research are students from origin Javanese people at the eleventh grade in SMAN 1 Plemahan in the academic year 2019/2020. While in analyzing the data, there are five steps used: the researcher categorized the students’ pronunciation which is interfered and not interfered, described the inteference, interpreted the data, calculated the percentage, and drew conclusion. The result of this thesis shows that Javanese accent as a mother tongue of Javanese people is interference in pronouncing fricative dental consonant. They were the replacement of [ð] with [d], the substitution of [ð] with [t] and the switching of [ð] with [θ]. The replacement of those sounds is based in the similarity of characteristics because Javanese does not have those sounds.
