Abstract

Writing is one of the most challenging skills for EFL students, especially in composing coherent and creative narrative texts. In the digital era, mobile-based learning provides flexible, interactive, and accessible solutions that align with students’ habits and learning needs. Therefore, a mobile application was developed to support junior high school students in narrative writing. The preliminary version was designed before conducting a needs analysis, and further improvements were made based on student input and expert feedback during the development process. This study employed the Research and Development (R&D) method following Borg and Gall’s model, which includes seven stages: needs analysis, product development, expert validation, revision I, field testing, revision II, and final product. A total of 31 eighth-grade students from MTsM 17 Kranji were involved in the needs analysis and try-out phases. The product was validated by one media expert and two content experts to ensure its quality in both technical and pedagogical aspects. Revisions were made after each stage to refine the application according to the users’ and experts’ suggestions. The final product was rated “very good” in terms of content, design, interactivity, and usability. Students found the application engaging, easy to use, and helpful in guiding them through the narrative writing stages. The results indicate that the application is feasible and effective in enhancing students’ writing skills, making it a valuable tool in digital-based English language learning.
