Abstract

Reading comprehension is one of the important skills in learning English because it helps students understand and interpret written information. However, many students still face difficulties in comprehending descriptive texts due to low engagement, limited participation, and the lack of interactive and collaborative learning activities. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate whether the integration of the Edpuzzle application and the Jigsaw technique effectively improves students’ reading comprehension of descriptive texts. This study employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test and post-test control group design. The sample consisted of 64 seventh-grade students selected through purposive sampling based on the similarity of students’ initial reading abilities, academic characteristics, and classroom conditions. Class VII.1, consisting of 32 students, was assigned as the experimental group and was taught using the integration of Edpuzzle and the Jigsaw technique. Meanwhile, Class VII.5, consisting of 32 students, was assigned as the control group and was taught using video-based instruction and group discussion. The data were collected through reading comprehension tests and observation sheets and analyzed using ANCOVA with the assistance of IBM SPSS Statistics version 22. The findings showed that the students in the experimental group achieved better improvement in reading comprehension compared to those in the control group. The mean score of the experimental group increased from 66.56 in the pre-test to 84.84 in the post-test. The result of ANCOVA analysis indicated that the significance value was lower than 0.05, indicating a significant difference between the experimental and control groups. Therefore, the null hypothesis (H₀) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Hₐ) was accepted. In conclusion, the integration of the Edpuzzle application with the Jigsaw technique was effective in improving students’ reading comprehension of descriptive texts. This approach also enhanced students’ engagement, participation, and collaboration during the learning process.
