Abstract

This study examines the use of discourse markers in Prabowo Subianto’s interview on Al-Jazeera. Discourse markers are an important component of communication since they help speakers organize ideas and manage interaction during conversation. In political interview, these markers can reflect how politicians maintain coherence or convey the messages to the public. This study aims to identify the types of discourse markers used in interview and to analyze their functions. This study employs a descriptive qualitative design. Data were collected from the interview transcript and analyzed by identifying, classifying, and interpreting discourse markers based on their functions in the interaction. In analyzing the data, the researcher identified and classified discourse markers based on Schiffrin’s theory, and analyzed their pragmatic functions using Fraser’s theory. The data were analyzed through several stages: classifying or categorizing, analyzing, interpreting, and drawing conclusion. The findings show that various discourse markers, such as, oh, well, and, but, so, by the way, then, and you know, were frequently used in the interviews. These markers not only function as connectors between utterances but also as strategic tools in communication, such as shifts the focus of conversation, add an expand on information, or to express conclusions or logical relationships. Furthermore, this study concludes that discourse markers play a crucial role in organizing discourse and supporting communication strategies in political interviews. The use of these discourse markers reflects how speakers manage ideas, negotiate meaning, and maintain good interactions with both the interviewer and the audience.
