Abstract
In the current digital era, technology has become increasingly integrated into English language learning to support more interactive and engaging classroom activities. However, the implementation of technology-based media in speaking instruction remains limited, while many students still experience difficulties in speaking English, particularly in terms of confidence and fluency. As a result, students often have limited opportunities to engage in meaningful speaking practice. Therefore, there is a need for innovative learning media that can support students’ speaking development and encourage active participation in classroom activities. To address this issue, this research aimed to design and develop iSpeak, an Augmented Reality (AR)-based flashcard media for teaching speaking abilities to eighth-grade students.his research aimed to design and develop iSpeak, an Augmented Reality (AR)-based flashcard media for teaching speaking abilities to eighth-grade students. This research employed the Research and Development (R&D) method using the ADDIE model proposed by Branch (2009). This model consists of several steps that can help researchers or developers. The steps consisted of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation stages. The research involved 30 eighth-grade students of MTsN 1 Kota Kediri. The data were collected through classroom observation, questionnaires, and expert validation sheets involving material and media experts. The quantitative data obtained from expert validation sheets and students’ response questionnaires were analyzed using percentage calculations and interpreted using qualitative criteria. The findings revealed that the material expert validation reached 90%, while the media expert validation improved from 89% before revision to 100% after revision, categorized as “Valid”. In addition, students’ responses reached 85.6%, indicating positive perceptions toward the implementation of iSpeak in speaking practices. The integration of augmented reality visualizations, useful vocabulary, and guiding topics that helped students participate actively and confidently. Therefore, iSpeak is considered appropriate and practical as an augmented reality-based speaking learning media for eighth-grade students.
