Abstract

Many EFL students still face difficulties in understanding reading texts, especially narrative texts, due to limited vocabulary and low interest in reading activities. Traditional teaching methods often make students feel less engaged, which affects their comprehension ability. In response to this issue, this study aims to examine the effectiveness of the Wattpad application in improving students’ reading comprehension at SMKN 3 Kediri. This research applied a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental design. Two groups were involved in this study: an experimental group that learned through the Wattpad application and a control group that used the school coursebook. The population consisted of tenth-grade students, with a total sample of 70 students divided into two classes: 35 students in the experimental group (DKV 1) and 35 students in the control group (DKV 2). The data were collected through pre-test and post-test instruments and analyzed using ANCOVA with the help of SPSS.The results showed that the use of the Wattpad application had a significant effect on students’ reading comprehension. The mean score of the experimental group increased from 57.94 in the pre-test to 72.11 in the post-test, while the control group improved from 57.71 to 62.17. The ANCOVA result revealed a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating that the null hypothesis was rejected. These findings suggest that the Wattpad application is effective in enhancing students’ reading comprehension, as it provides more engaging and relatable reading materials that encourage students to be more active in the learning process.
