Abstract
Reading is a process of understanding the text to get the prior knowledge such as knowledge of content, vocabulary (construct about the meaning that conveyed by the author) and structure. Strategies as a learning techniques, behaviors, problem-solving or study skills which make learning more effective and efficient. There are some factors that contributed for having good reading comprehension. One of them is reading strategies. Reading strategies are very important to help the reader comprehend the text in the act of reading. Therefore, the aim of this research was to investigate the correlation between students’ reading strategies and their reading comprehension achievement at the eleventh grade of MAN 1 Kediri. The design of this research was correlational research. The data of students are collected through simple random sampling technique. It involved 75 students at the eleventh grade of MAN 1 Kediri in academic year 2019/2020 from 250 population. The researcher used Survey of Reading Strategies (SORS) questionnaire by Mokhtari & Sheorey (2002) and reading comprehension test as the instruments of this research. The data was analyzed by using descriptive statistic and Pearson Product Moment Correlation in SPSS 25 version. The result of this research showed that the data was normally distributed. It was proven by the Kolmogrov-Smirnov test that the result of sig. value were 0.075 for students’ reading strategies and 0.200 for reading comprehension test higher than 0.05. Based on the findings, can be seen that there is correlation between students’ reading strategies and their reading comprehension achievement at the eleventh grade of MAN 1 Kediri. The most frequently use of reading strategies was Global Reading Strategies 1, mean = 3.67; SD = 0.970 and the least frequently was Problem Solving Strategies 28, mean = 2.62; SD = 0.974. The result of correlation analysis revealed that the correlation coefficient or the r (0.626) was higher than rtable (0.277), based on the interpretation the strenght of this correlation is moderate correlation. Then the level of probability (p) significance (sig.2 tailed) was 0.000 lower than 0.05. Thus, it was enough evidence to reject the null hypothesis and accepted the alternative hypothesis. It can be concludes that there is correlation between students’ reading strategies and their reading comprehension achievement at the eleventh grade of MAN 1 Kediri. Therefore, teacher must be considered the current use of EFL reading strategies among their students and actions they can take to help their students improve their reading abilities.
