Abstract
The development of supplementary English-language reading materials is essential in Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) that lack contextual learning resources. At the Bahrul Ulum Islamic Boarding School in Tambakberas, Jombang, reading materials integrating local wisdom and Islamic scholarly traditions are scarce. Biographies of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) figures were selected as authentic content, aligning with the principles of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), which integrates language learning with an understanding of cultural and religious contents. This study used a Research and Development (R&D) approach with the Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation (ADDIE) model to develop three units of reading materials based on the biographies of K.H. Hasyim Asy'ari, K.H. Wahab Hasbullah, and K.H. Bisri Syansuri. Each unit includes biographical texts, vocabulary enrichment, and comprehension exercises designed to support the CLIL elements of content, communication, cognition, and culture. Expert validation was conducted to assess the accuracy of the content, Aswaja values, and language appropriateness. The results of the study indicate that the developed materials are highly suitable for use. Validation by linguists achieved a score of 93%, validation by NU experts reached 92%, and a student questionnaire showed a positive response of 81%. These findings confirm that the supplementary reading materials are not only valid and practical, but also suitable for supporting CLIL-based reading learning at the Bahrul Ulum Tambakberas Islamic Boarding School in Jombang.
