Abstract

In Grice’s theory of cooperative principles, successful communication depends on the extent to which speakers adhere to four conversational maxims: quantity, quality, relevance, and manner. When these maxims are obeyed, they are called observed maxims. However, in conversational practice, maxims are often non-observed or disobeyed, either intentionally or unintentionally. One form of non-observed is flouting maxim, which is a deliberate floution of maxims to convey hidden or implicit meanings. This study aims to identify the types of maxims, determine which maxims are flouted by the main character and other characters in the film, and analyze the implicit meaning that arises from the flouting maxim based on Grice’s theory. This research used descriptive qualitative method, with data in the form of conversations in the movie The Prestige. Data analysis is carried out through four stages, firstly Identification, finding utterances that intentionally break maxims. Secondly Categorization, determining the types of maxims that are flouted and the implicatures that arise. Thirdly Comparison, looking at patterns and differences in flouting between contexts. And finally summarizing the results of the analysis to answer the research objectives. The resecher found were there are 46 cases of flouting maxims, consisting of flouting of the maxims of quantity (11 cases), quality (19 cases), relevance (6 cases), and manner (10 cases). All of these cases result in Particularized Conversational Implicature (PCI), which means that the hidden meaning can only be understood based on the specific context of the conversation. Thus, it can be concluded that the flouting of maxims in the movie The Prestige is a communication strategy that contains implied meanings that can only be understood by paying attention to the situational context.
