Domestication And Foreignization: An Analysis on Cultural Terms in Alberthiene Endah's Merry Riana: Mimpi Sejuta Dolar translated into Merry Riana: Million Dollar Dream Maggie Tiojakin. Advisors: (1) Dr. Mukhammad Abdullah, M. Ag. (2) Mohammad Muhyidin, M.Pd Key words: Domestication, Foreignization, Cultural Terms, Translation Strategies. Translating Indonesian cultural words into English is an interesting topic to be analyzed since each language has its own culture that may differ from one language to another. Looking at how a translator translates Indonesian cultural words into English is an important research to be explored to know deeper about cultural words and to find out what translation strategies should be applied so that a better translation can be produced. The researcher used a descriptive qualitative research because one of the best ways to analyze a novel is through a qualitative method. Qualitative research was employed since the data of this research are in the form of words and sentences. This study was about identification of cultural terms proposed by Newmark related to the use of foreignizing and domesticating translation strategies proposed by Pederson. In other words, this study was accomplished by observing and comparing the product of Alberthiene Endah's Merry Riana: Mimpi Sejuta Dolar translated into Merry Riana: Million Dollar Dream by Maggie Tiojakin. The findings of this research imply that Organization, Customs and Ideas category (type of cultural terms) is in the highest rank with 48 data out of 82 total data. It is then followed by social culture and material culture, then followed by gestures and habibts then the lowest rank of all is the last category which is ecology. It is also found that there are 52 data out of 82 data considered under the category of foreignization ideology. On the other hand, 30 data considered under the category of domestication ideology. Direct-translation calque strategy is the most dominant strategy can be found in the novel. This is probably due to using this translation strategy the cultural words seem to appear exotic to the TL readers and the second of the possible reasons is that the translator preferred the easiest way to avoid the difficulty in rendering the cultural terms. The research findings also indicate that there is no tendency from the translator to perform particular strategy for particular types of cultural terms but ecology. All ecology findings are tend to use retention complete.
