English Department Faculty of Education State College for Islamic Studies (STAIN) Kediri. Advisors: (1) Drs. Agus Edi W.M.Pd (II) Dr. Sri Wahyuni M.Pd Key words: Error Analysis, Narrative and Simple Past Tense Nowadays in senior high school learning English especially simple past is very important but sometimes they get some errors in writing. This study focuses on the error that made by student in writing narrative simple past. The objective of this study is to identify whether the students make errors, and to find the types of errors made by the first year students of SMA SUNAN GUNUNG JATI Ngunut Tulungagung in learning the Simple Past Tense in their Narrative Text. The classification of the types of the error of this study was based on Dulay, and the procedure of error analysis used Ellis' procedure in this study, the writer used descriptive analysis method to describe students' error and analyze the data. The data which were taken from the test focus on Simple Past Tense. The sample of this study is the students of tenth grade of SMA SUNAN GUNUNG JATI Ngunut Tulungagung, academic year 2016/2017, the class X IPS consisting of 28 students. Procedure of data analysis covered identifying and recapitulating. The result of this study was 192 errors and the findings showed that the students made errors in misformation (112 errors or 59.%), omission (29 errors or 15.%), misordering (29 errors or 15%) and addition (22 errors or 11.%). Based on the study, the writer concludes that the eleventh grade students of SMA SUNAN GUNUNG JATI Ngunut Tulungagung, most of the X students made errors in using the Simple Past Tense, and the classification type of error was in misformation. Based on the finding previously, it can be suggested that (1) the teacher explain the simple past form clearly to the students and make sure that the students understood about it, (2) the teacher has to be creative in teaching writing. so it makes them interest to study more, and (3) the teacher ought to motivates the students to be more relax in learning English, tell them that English is easy to learn, and do not be afraid to make mistake, because it is a process to reach a success.
