Abstract
Inayati, Risalatul, 2015, Politeness in Phatic Communion Used by English Department Students at STAIN Kediri. English Department Faculty of Education, State Collage for Islamic Studies, Advisors (1) Burhanudin Syaifulloh, M. Ed and (2) Moh. Muhyidin, M.Pd. Key word: Politeness, politeness strategy, phatic communion, DCT The aim of this research is to describe kinds of politeness strategy used by English Department Students at STAIN Kediri and how the politeness strategy are applied by the students in intimate relation and distance relation. It is a crucial role to maintain other's feeling and to create interaction because people use strategy to communicate in their daily conversation whether they realize or not. This research design of this research is descriptive qualitative method. It employed cluster sampling technique and the object of this research is students at speaking 3 of English Department at STAIN Kediri. The data was collected from response of the students on DCT and used keywords-in-context to analyze the data. The result of the analysis can be seen as follows: First, there are four kinds of politeness strategy employed by the students to cover phatic communion namely bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off record that is proposed by Brown and Levinson. Second, the students who applied politeness strategies have differentiation in intimate relation and distance relation. The students covered phatic communion of ritual word, standard topic of conversation, supportive chat, and meaningless word with the strategies of politeness by Brown and Levinson to start the talk, to make chit-chat, to keep the talk, to express solidarity, to express hospitality, to make gossip, and to create comfort purposely to make hearer feeling pleasant. In intimate relation most students applied positive politeness while in distance relation most students applied negative politeness. The finding was appropriate with the theory told that people who have intimate relation will be high in solidarity so that the politeness will be less. While, people who have distance relation in communication will be low in solidarity and the politeness will be high, so that the politeness strategy used will be less polite. The researcher offers some suggestion for the next researchers who are interested in socio-pragmatic study to conduct about the same point that is politeness strategy. Yet, they may look at it from different point of view such as they use different method to get the data. It is also possible for the next researcher to conduct the study focusing on other dimension.
