Pd. (2) Nur Afifi, M. App. Ling. Keywords: Politeness, Politeness Strategy, Talk Show, Face 2 Face with Desi Anwar. Politeness is an attitude that every people should apply in their life. The use of politeness is really important to make the communication run smoothly. By applying the politeness, people can see someone's personality. Also, it can influence to their social life. This study is an analysis of politeness strategies applied in a talk show program, Face 2 Face with Desi Anwar. The researcher decided to choose this program because she was interested to know how was politeness strategies used in this talk show program. The researcher is curious about the application of politeness strategies that were used by Indonesian presenter. The purpose of this study is giving examples how politeness strategies are applied in conversation. The politeness strategies that were analyzed include bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness and off record. This study uses descriptive qualitative method as the design. The instrument of the study is the researcher herself. The researcher collected the data by downloading the video of Face 2 Face then watching it. After that the researcher found some utterances in the talk show and classified them into politeness strategies according to Brown and Levinson's theory. The utterances in this talk show program are the data that will be analyzed. To analyze the data, the researcher uses some steps. The steps are reducing the data, identification, classification and drawing conclusion. The findings of this analysis show that there are 69 utterances found as the data which are analyzed in the politeness strategies. Based on the findings, there are 4 utterances found in bald on record, for positive politeness strategy 49 utterances. Then in negative politeness strategy there are 9 utterances are found, and for off record strategy there are 7 utterances. The result of this study shows that the most frequently used in this talk show program is positive politeness strategy. It is because this strategy is expected to minimize the distance between the speaker and hearer by showing the friendliness. On the other hand, by using positive politeness the speaker is considered to recognize to the hearer's positive face. Because this is a talk show program, it is important for the speaker to be closer to the hearer. So the speaker uses positive politeness strategy because it is highlighting friendliness between the speaker and hearer.
