Abstract

App. Ling: "Comparative Study of Polemas Strategies Used by an American and a British Radio Interviewers", English Department, Faculty of Education, State College for Islamic Studies (STAIN) Kediri, 2015 Key words: Politeness Strategies, Talk Radio, Radio Interviewer Politeness is the measure that language is used well. Because language i not only to be learned but also to be used. English learners are expected to have a competence in communication sesing English not only grammatically comed but aho polite in use. Sustaining this expectation, politeness strategies hely the students nen the communication well since often what needs to be communicated is unpleasant and threatening to the hearer. By investigating the one of politeness strategies in one sample of talk show may give description of examples how t is applied. This significance is not only for students but also for teachers when they do teaching. It is because the habitual way of stodents learning is mostly influenced by what they see and listen from their teachers This study uses descriptive qualitative research as the method in analyring the data. Samples of talk radio show broadcasted in American and British radio program become the data source to be investigated, it is to know how the interviewers apply the use of politeness strategies. Finding some similarities and differences between them also become a part of this study since this is a kind of comparative study. The data were collected by downloading the scripts from the Internet. Some politeness strategies proposed by Brown and Levinson are wed analyze the data The result of the study revealed that both radio interviewen, American and British applied some of politeness strategies. The American radio imevicwer mostly used negative politeness strategy in mitigating the threatening acts towards his interviewee's negative face. While Bald on record strategy is the most odes used by the British radio interviewer. The most uned type by the two outs is Ianpersonalization as the type of negative poläeness strategy and Latte or desine to maintain someone's face as the type of Bald on record stranngy
