Abstract

[13:39, 22/01/2026] Why~: Keywords: translation, lexical adjustments. Translation is a craft consisting in the attempt to replace a written message and/or statement in one language by the same message and/or statement in another language. Translation can be applied on the written language such as translate a magazine, a book, a novel, etc. Novel is a kind of literature that is usually has analogical language or meaning that is need certain technique to understand it. In the translation of novel, we should extend the message in source language novel as good as possible to make it understandable easily in the target language novel. So, it is need a certain act of adjusting or adaptation to make the message can be transferred into target language (TL) well. This act is called adjustments. Based on the background, the researcher decide the problem of the study, that is to know what are the lexical adjustments found in the translation of Cerita Dalam Keheningan by Zara Zettira Z.R into Every Silence Has a Story. To get the answer of the question, the researcher takes translation study in descriptive-qualitative to analyze the novel. The researcher found words that had lexical adjustment from the source language into target language. The object of this study is Indonesian version of Cerita Dalam keheningan and the English translation Every Silence Has a Story. After analyzing the data, the researcher found some lexical adjustments that are used from source language into target language. The lexical adjustments are: (i) figure of speech, the figure of speech in SL are changed into figure of speech in TL where there is a word that is replaced by a word that has the same meaning in the TL. Besides, the figure of speech in SL is replaced by idiom; (ii) cultural terms, some cultural terms in SL are not translated, the words of cultural terms in SL are translated originally. Besides, some cultural terms in SL are replaced by words or phrase that have similar meaning in TL, even there are cultural terms that are paraphrased equivalent; (iii) broadening, some words in SL are paraphrased. Besides, some other word in SL are not translated because it is a name of a brand; (iv) narrowing, the word in SL. is replaced by a word that has specific meaning in TL; (v) loan words, the words in SL are not replaced because it are borrowed from another language. Besides, there are some other loan words that is replaced orthographically. Based on the researcher's finding, it is suggested for the next researcher to conduct research on lexical adjustments in the other form of literary work to enrich the studies. It is also hoped that the study of lexical adjustments involves other languages so that it can broaden the knowledge in linguistic aspect.
