Abstract

Parts of speech take a big part in English rules. They are very important things to be mastered. But, many students cannot categorize English words known as English parts of speech. Some of them cannot differentiate verb, noun, adjective, etc. Parts of speech are very important for the student who wants to build an English sentence correctly. This paper entitled "The correlation between students' parts of speech mastery and their ability in constructing english sentence at STAIN Kediri". This study is to investigate the correlation between Students' mastery ofparts of speech and their ability in building sentence structure. The objectives of the research are to identify the students' mastery parts of speech relating to the students' ability in constructing Englishsentence and to find out the correlation between Students' mastery of parts of speechand their ability in constructing English sentence structure at STAIN Kediri. The writer determined to the fourth semesterof English department students of STAIN Kediri as the population and took 50 students as a sample with purposive sampling technique. The method used in the research was descriptive method. The tests used is achievement test consisted of word categories, identifying error, translating and jumble words. These are to investigate the students' mastery of parts of speech and using jumble words and translating test to investigate the student ability in building sentence structure. Theresearch hypothesis consisted of (H_{a}) and ( H ). The hypothesis (H_{a}) means there is correlation between students' mastery parts of speech and their ability in constructing English sentence structure. And Null (H_{0}) means there is no correlation between students' mastery of parts of speech and their ability in constructing English sentence structure. The coefficient correlation result between the students' parts of speech mastery and their ability in building basic sentence structure was0.7240. Based on the criteria of coefficient correlation, the result showed a hight correlation. In other way, based on the data calculation by using degree of freedom (df) N-1 and level of significance at 5% (0,05), the value of test was greater than t table In the line of statistical hypothesis criteria in previous chapter, the writer concluded that H_{0} was rejected and H_{a} accepted. It means there is a significant relationship between students' parts of speech mastery and their ability in constructing English sentence.
