Abstract

The objective of the study is to know students who taught by using "Think Pair Share" get higher score than students who taught by using telling method in teaching speaking at first grade in SMAN 1 Ngronggot. This research used quasi experimental quantitative design. The number of the subject is 68 students who are the first grade students of SMAN 1 Ngronggot and divided into two groups (experimental and control group). Each group was taught in different treatment. The experimental group was taught using Think Pair Share technique and control group was taught using telling method. The researcher used two tests to measure the students' speaking ability, they are pre-test and post test. To know the effectiveness of Think Pair Share technique in teaching speaking. The result of the test was analyzed ANCOVA through SPSS. Based on the data analysis, the result of statistical computation of ANCOVA reveals that significant at (p) .000 < 0.05 level. Since the significant value was smaller than 0.05 statistically, there was enough evidence to reject the null hypothesis, then the alternative was received. It means that the students' who were taught by using Think Pair Share got significantly better speaking mastery than the students who were taught by telling method. Therefore, the hypothesis "the students who are taught by Think Pair Share get higher score than the students who are taught by telling method is accepted. Based on the result of the test, the researcher concluded that using Think Pair Share in improving the students' speaking skill at SMAN 1 Ngronggot is effective. The researcher suggested to the teachers to use this technique as alternative in improving students' speaking skill
