Abstract
This study aims to design a CLT-based English-speaking syllabus for the English Supplementary Program at MAN 2 Kota Kediri. The program was developed to enhance students’ speaking competence and motivation by integrating the principles of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT). Previously, many students in the English Fun program demonstrated low confidence and participation due to monotonous, teacher-centered instruction. The supplementary program specifically targets students from the Language Class. However, based on observations and interviews with stakeholders, it was found that students in the Language Class did not yet demonstrate higher English proficiency—particularly in speaking—compared to students from other majors. The research employed the ADDIE model, consisting of five stages: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. Data were collected through questionnaires administered to 64 eleventh and twelfth-grade students to identify their needs, lacks, and wants. In addition, an interview with the English teacher was conducted to understand the teaching environment and contextual factors. The results of the needs and environment analyses revealed that students required more engaging speaking activities, such as games, role-plays, vlogs, storytelling, and English performances. The developed syllabus was validated by experts and implemented in the English Fun program. The findings indicated that the syllabus met the validity criteria, with 94% being highly feasible. The teacher also confirmed that the syllabus was easy to apply and adaptable to classroom contexts. The practicality score showed that 87% were very feasible, and through the communicative task of making a vlog, students successfully improved their motivation and speaking confidence. Overall, the CLT-based English-speaking syllabus provides a practical framework for enhancing students’ speaking performance and engagement in English learning.
