Abstract

This study investigates the use and functions of metadiscourse markers in Systematic Literature Review (SLR) articles published in national and international English journals. A total of six SLR articles include three national and three international were analyzed using Hyland’s framework, which categorizes metadiscourse into interactive and interactional markers. The findings reveal clear differences in both frequency and function: national articles tend to use more interactive markers, such as transitions, frame markers, and endophoric references, as well as interactional markers like hedges, boosters, and self-mentions, reflecting explicit guidance, strong authorial presence, and L2/EFL considerations. In contrast, international articles use metadiscourse more selectively, emphasizing key rhetorical moves and subtle evaluation, indicating reader-oriented and culturally implicit strategies. These differences highlight the influence of academic conventions, cultural norms, audience expectations, and writers’ confidence in English on metadiscourse use. The study contributes to understanding how metadiscourse functions in academic writing, offering practical insights for students, educators, and researchers interested in writing strategies and discourse analysis in both national and international contexts.
