Abstract

Brotherhood is a fundamental value in human social life, the Qur'an as the holy book of Muslims has emphasized the importance of brotherhood through various stories, including in Surah Yusuf which describes the dynamics of relations between brothers. On the other hand, Lontar Yusup Banyuwangi, a classic Javanese literary manuscript that also tells the life of the Prophet Yusuf, also contains noble values in brotherly relationships. This background prompted this study to examine and compare the values of brotherhood contained in Tafsir Al-Munir Surah Yusuf with similar values reflected in the manuscript of Lontar Yusup Banyuwangi. This research aims to answer two main problem formulations, namely: (1) how are the values of brotherhood explained in Tafsir Al-Munir Surah Yusuf and in Lontar Yusup Banyuwangi? and (2) how are the similarities and differences between these values from the two sources? This research uses a qualitative method with a library research approach. Data analysis was carried out through thematic and comparative approaches, with primary sources in the form of Tafsir Al-Munir and Lontar Yusup from Pupuh Kasmaran. The results of the analysis show that in substance, both texts emphasize the importance of maintaining harmony in fraternal relations, even though they are conveyed through different styles and approaches. Tafsir al-Munir emphasizes the aspect of spirituality and prophetic example as the foundation of brotherhood, while Lontar Yusup depicts it with an emotional touch and humanistic local cultural symbolism. The difference in the context of delivery makes these values feel complementary, one strengthening in terms of faith, the other in terms of humanity. Thus, this study not only uncovers the alignment of values between classical interpretation and local culture, but also affirms that fraternal teachings are universal and relevant across space and time.
