Abstract
Pertiwi, Krisnawati Jenny. 2025. The Effectiveness of Using Diary for Teaching Recount Text Writing at SMKS Putra Harapan Kediri. Thesis. Department of English Language Education, Faculty of Tarbiyah, State Islamic Institute of Kediri. Advisors: (I) Dr. Toyyibah, S.S., M.Pd. (II) Drs. Agus Edi Winarto, M.Pd. Keywords: Diary writing, effectiveness, quasi-experimental research, recount text, writing skills. Improving students’ writing skills remains a key challenge in English language education, particularly in mastering narrative genres such as recount texts. Many students struggle with organizing their ideas in chronological order, using appropriate tenses, and effectively expressing personal experiences. In response to this issue, this study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of diary writing as an instructional method to enhance tenth-grade students’ recount text writing abilities at SMKS Putra Harapan Kediri. To achieve this goal, a quasi-experimental design was used, specifically a pretest-posttest control group model. The participants included two classes: the experimental group was taught using diary writing, while the control group received instruction through a standard teaching method. Data were collected through writing tests administered before and after the treatment and analyzed using ANCOVA to assess the significance of the results and the effect size of the intervention. The results showed a significant improvement in the experimental group’s posttest scores compared to the control group. The ANCOVA analysis confirmed that diary writing had a meaningful effect on students' writing performance, with a high effect size (partial eta squared = 0.966). This indicates that diary writing strongly supports students’ ability to write recount texts. Therefore, it can be concluded that diary writing is an effective method for teaching recount text writing and should be considered in writing instruction.
