Abstract

Abdia Elma Hawa. 2025. “The Lexical Density and Readability of Reading Texts in Indonesian High School English Textbooks Grade 12th under K-13 Curriculum and Merdea Curriculum”. Thesis. Department of English Language Education, Faculty of Tarbiyah, IAIN Kediri Kediri. Advisors: (1) Nur Afifi, M.App.Ling., Ph.D. (II) Annisa Aulia Saharani, M.Pd. Keywords: English Textbooks, Lexical Density, Readability, Reading texts, Reading is one method of improving language ability. It enables language learners to acquire new skills while reading, because it includes a variety of reading texts and activities based on the content being read, the textbook can be a crucial resource for a reading skills class. The amount of lexical density and readability are the most crucial criteria in determining whether a learner finds reading English texts simple or difficult. The objectives of this study are to identify the lexical density and readability of reading texts presented in Indonesian High School English Textbooks grade 12th under K-13 curriculum and Merdeka curriculum This research includes as qualitative research, particularly content analysis since it focuses on the analysis or interpretation of reading material in textbook. Ure's (1971) formula was used to quantify the lexical density in reading texts and the level of readability test by Flesch Reading Ease Scale by Rudolf Flesch (1949). The data is taken from the PDF book downloaded on the Ministry of Education and Culture website. There are 24 reading texts. Ten reading texts in Indonesian High School English Textbooks grade 12th under K-13 curriculum and fourteen reading texts in Indonesian High School English Textbooks grade 12th under Merdeka curriculum. The results indicate that the grade 12th under the K-13 curriculum textbook has an average lexical density value of 48% or rounded to which is in the not dense category. Meanwhile, the grade 12th under the Merdeka curriculum textbook has an average lexical density value of 51,5% or rounded up to which is in the less dense category. A text with less lexical terms will include less information than a document with less grammatical words. For readability level in grade 12th, under the K-13 curriculum textbook has an average readability score of 53.513% or in the Fairly Difficult category. Meanwhile, the grade 12th textbook under Merdeka curriculum generally has an average readability score of 53.729% or in the fairly difficult category. Thus, both of them are suitable for grade 12th students, it is expected that they can understand the texts as these texts are more appropriate for 10th-12th grade students.
