Abstract

This study examines the translation methods used by John McGlynn in translating Laut Bercerita (2017) by Leila S. Chudori into its English version, The Sea Speaks His Name. The research applies Peter Newmark’s translation method framework to analyze how linguistic and cultural elements are adapted in translation. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, the study analyzes 484 translation samples, identifying seven out of eight translation methods proposed by Newmark. The most frequently used method is communicative translation (31.28%), followed by literal translation (29%), and free translation (22.15%). Meanwhile, the least used methods are adaptation (3.88%), semantic translation (5.48%), idiomatic translation (7.53%), and word-for-word translation (0.62%). Notably, faithful translation is not employed in the translation process. The findings indicate that McGlynn prioritizes readability and naturalness for English readers while maintaining the core messages of the original text. This research contributes to the understanding of literary translation strategies, particularly in translating Indonesian historical and cultural narratives into English.
