Abstract
This study focuses on the correlation between students’ multiple intelligence and their performance in reading section of IELTS at IAIN Kediri. There are eight types of multiple intelligences according to Gardner. Those are linguistic-verbal, musical, logical-mathematical, spatial, bodily-kinesthetic, intrapersonal, interpersonal, and naturalist intelligences. In terms of performance, it refers to result of post reading test in IELTS which the reading text in IELTS is basically academic reading. This research is quantitative research which applies correlational design. There are 70 participants or EFL students from IAIN Kediri. They are the seventh semester students of English Department in academic year 2017/2018 who took IELTS in class C and D. They did the IELTS post test in their class and answered 106 items questionnare of Multiple Intelligences Developmental Assessment Scales (MIDAS). All the questionnare was given in English. In terms of multiple intelligences, intrapersonal intelligence (M=53.7, SD=8.08) and interpersonal intelligence (M=52.2. SD=8.51) were found as the most frequently used intelligence, while kinesthetic (M=24.7, SD=5.64) was the least frequently used intelligence in this study. In short, the participants of this study tend to use more on intrapersonal and interpersonal intelligences compare to other multiple intelligences based on the questionnare distributed. In terms of students’ performance in the IELTS reading section, the value of the mean (5.64), the standard deviation (0.76) and the sum (395.00) indicate evidence as the homogeneity of the sample on reading test of IELTS. Then, by using Pearson Product Moment Correlation ver.21 for windows, it was revealed that there is a positive weak correlation between students’ multiple intelligences and their performance in reading section of IELTS with the r score ,29 in the significance ,014. This also means that there is a linier relation between the variables where both of the are in the level of medium. Furthermore, it was also revealed that three of multiple intelligences are highly correlated with students’ performance in reading section of IELTS. Those are musical with r = ,262, kinesthetic with r = ,194, and spatial with r = ,195.
