Abstract

Writing is one of the skills in learning English. To make a good written, the writer need to pay attention to many things to have a good writing skill. Grammar is the most important one in writing. It is because grammar is a basis in learning language, especially English. Without having a good grammar, the sentences in students’ paragraph will also be difficult to be understood. And in academic writing, often lecturer concern avoids plagiarism issue. Therefore, in order to have a good writing skill and avoid plagiarism, it is necessary for students to learn some important techniques in writing. One of the important techniques is paraphrasing. The researcher uses descriptive analysis method in this study. So she collects the data needed, and then analyzed the data based on Betty S Azar’s classification of error. The object of this study 48 students for 6 classes of fourth semester of IAIN Kediri. The most grammatical error made by English student of IAIN Kediri, it can be explained that the types and the total errors start from highest until the lowest are spelling is 46 errors under percentage 15,9%, word choice is 44 errors under percentage 15,2%, capitalization is 42 errors under percentage 14,5%, singular plural is 27 errors under the percentage 9,3%, word form is 27 errors under percentage 9,3%, verb tense is 27 errors under percentage 9,3%, add a word is 19 errors under percentage 6,6%, omit a word is 15 errors under percentage 5,2%, incomplete sentence is 14 errors under percentage 4,8%, run-on sentence is 9 errors under percentage 3,1%, meaning not clear is 8 errors under percentage 2,8%, punctuation is 7 errors under percentage 2,4%, article is 5 errors under percentage 1,7%, and there is error in word order.
