Abstract

Listening plays significant role in learning English. Unfortunately, listening subject is still neglected by educators. This is because listening skill is one of the most difficult subjects. Nowadays, there is an appropriate media to support listening learning process. That is watching cartoon English movie. Watching cartoon English movie to help students to enhance students’ listening proficiency.The aim of this research was to find out the significant difference between Watching Cartoon English Movie and Non-Cartoon English Movie (The Real Human) in Teaching Listening Ability. The study is experimental. This is because this study tries to examine students’ capability before given a treatment and after given a treatment. The sample of this study was 76 students of SMAN 1 Gurah Kediri. They are students in class X IIS-2 as the experimental group and X IIS-3 as the control group in academic year 2017/2018. The X IIS-2 class was taught by Watching Cartoon English Movie and X IIS-3 class was taught by Watching Non-Cartoon English Movie. The data of this research were collected using pre-test and post-test. The data was analyses by using ANCOVA through SPSS. The result show of pre-test, the mean score of experimental group was 69 and the control group was 84.29. In the post-test, the mean score of experimental group was 66.39 and the control group was 80.14. The result of the output ANCOVA showed the significant value is p (0.004) <α (0.05). Because of the significant value is smaller than 0.05, there was enough evidence to reject the null hypothesis and the alternative hypothesis was accepted. It means that the students who listening by using watching cartoon English movie as media better than the students who listening by using watching Non-Cartoon English Movie (The Real Human). Based on the result of the test, the researcher concludes that using by using watching cartoon English movie is more effective in teaching listening at SMAN 1 Gurah Kediri.
