Abstract

Translation is a transformation of text meaning from source language into target language. Translation process can be applied in the movie as a popular worldwide entertainment product in the form of subtitles. An English movie can be translated into Indonesian to help audiences to understand the dialog in the movie. This study aimed to know the translation methods that were used in the Hidden Figures movie and followed by finding out the technological and scientific terms since the movie by Theodore Melfi was set in NASA. This study is a qualitative which apply Peter Newmark’s theory to determine the translation Method applied on the three female lead’s dialogue. The data used in this study amounted to 558 utterances. The data was gathered by transcribing every main lead’s dialogue in the movie. Additionally, Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and Actor-Network Theory (ANT) were applied in analyzing technological and scientific terms. The findings showed that communicative translation is the most common method and amounted to 48,56%. Based on theoretical analysis by applying Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), it was found that technological terms fulfilled the concept of technology acceptance, Perceived Usefulness and Perceived ease of use. Furthermore, Actor-Network Theory (ANT) indicated the actual application of scientific terms through the interaction between the actors in network.
