Abstract

English is a foreign language in Indonesia. English is taught at schools in Indonesia, in order that students must master the four skills in English, they are writing, listening, reading and also speaking. Among those four skills, writing is one of the difficulties skill to learn and to master, because writing is an active skill, so students must have ideas or expressions into writing. Writing is a skill that should be learned by the students of SMAN 1 Plosoklaten. In fact, most of the students have problem related to writing ability. Therefore, the researcher has some strategies to make students understand in writing. One of the strategy is Think-Pair-Square. The objective of this study is to know the effectiveness of Think-Pair-Square in teaching writing descriptive text at SMAN 1 Plosoklaten. The design of this research was quasi-experimental study; with the total number of the sample were 59 students. There are two classes as the subject of the research. The researcher used two intruments, they are test and scoring rubrik. The test contains of pre-test and post-test. In collecting the data, the researcher used pre-test, treatment, post-test and scoring the result of the test. And the research data were analyzed by using ANCOVA. After the data had been collected and analyzed using ANCOVA through SPSS 16.0, the result showed that the average score of post-test in experimental and control group was different. The average score of pre-test at experimental group was 65.69, and for the control group was 60.59. While the average score of experimental group was 83.03, and the control group was 78.38. The significant value is 0.029, (0.029 < 0.05). It means that the null hypothesis can be rejected, and alternative hypothesis was accepted. Based on the result of the study, the researcher concludes that the Think-Pair-Square is an effective strategy in teaching writing descriptive text. Therefore, it is recommended that the teacher should apply Think-Pair-Square strategy in teaching writing descriptive text.
