Abstract

Writing is one of important skill in English. Sometimes, writing is considered as the hardest language skill because it is a productive skill in learning language. Writing is language skill that should be learned by the students of SMAN 1 Papar. Based on the 2004 Senior High School Curriculum, students need to know how to write letters, short message, advertisement, news, electronic mail, etc. In fact, most of the students have problem related to their writing ability. They could not have enough writing practices and their motivation to write are low. These makes their ideas could not be properly conveyed. The objective of this study is to improve students’ writing skill in recount text of SMAN 1 Papar by using Diary Writing. In this research, Classroom Action Research (CAR) is used. This action research is conducted in two cycles. The procedure of the research consists of preliminary study, planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. In collecting data, the researcher used writing test, observation checklist, scoring rubric, and field note. The result of the research shows that diary writing could improve students’ writing skill after 2 cycles. The result of the preliminary study shows that less of the students could write in English. Then the implementation in first cycle shows that 33.33% of the students could pass the test. It is improved but could not reach the criteria of success. Then, the results of the second cycle shows that 86.11% of the students are success. Based on the result of the study, the researcher concludes that students’ writing skill can be improved by using diary writing. Therefore, it is recommended for the teacher to apply diary writing in teaching writing skill.
