Abstract

One of the abilities that learner needs to master when studying English is writing. Writing is an ability that some students find challenging. Therefore, the teacher should make the learning process interesting, amazing, and enjoyable. One solution for solving the issue is to apply an appropriate approach. The researcher then attempted to teach writing using the draw label caption strategy. This strategy asks students to make a sketch and then give label for the sketch, from the sketch and label students can make a recount text organized and the ideas become more focused and systematic. The research objective is to investigated the effectiveness of using draw label caption strategy in teaching writing recount text. In this research, the researcher used quasi-experimental design. The sample for this study consisted of 62 eighth grade students from MTsN 3 Blitar during the second semester of the 2022/2023 academic year. This study uses two classes: VIII-A, which is the experimental class, and VIII-B, which is the control class. In this research, draw label caption strategy was used to teach VIII-A, whereas the outlining strategy was used to teach VIII-B. Pre-test and post-test were used to collect data. The data was analyzed using ANCOVA in SPSS 22. The result showed that the mean of the experimental and control classes' pre-test and post-tests show the research's outcome. The mean score for the experimental pre-test was 61.20, whereas the control group post-test was 58.37. Meanwhile, the experimental class's post-test score was 80.50, whereas the control class's score was 75.96. It is evident that the experimental class post-test was higher than the control group. Furthermore, the ANCOVA result revealed that (p) was 0.000. So, in this research Ha is accepted because p is less than the significance (0.05) and H0 is rejected. It can be concluded that draw label caption strategy was effective in teaching writing recount for junior high school students, especially those in the eighth grade at MTsN 3 Blitar.
