Abstract

Keywords: students’ strategies, students’ challenges, learning speaking, narrativeinquiry, pesantren. This study reveals students’ experiences in learning speaking. Especially for students who learn speaking at Pesantren area which has a different atmosphere, strategy, challenges, and problem solving from students who study it outside the Pesantren. The experiences focused on the students’ strategies and challenges in learning speaking at Pesantren. This study aims to investigate the students’ strategies and the challenges that the students face during learning speaking at Pesantren. This study used a narrative inquiry methodology and was particularly focused on students’ experiences in learning speaking at Pesantren. The researcher investigated students who are valuable in the English program based on the data. The three students were selected for this study, and these were the students who interacted with the students who offered to participate in the study. The framework of data analysis used narrative frame and interview. In order to arrange their experiences in the past, present, and future, students were encouraged to write about their experiences in a narrative frame.The interview conducted after students finished writing the narrative frames. The purpose of the interview was to find out from the participants about their life history inlearning to speak at Pesantren, their current experiences with the speaking activity, andtheir aspirations for the future. The finding reflected the strategies that the students used in learning speaking atPesantren. The strategies divided into two kinds, those are: Pesantren initiate program and students’ initiate strategies. Pesantren initiate program including English Area program and Teacher monitor. Furthermore, students’ initiate strategies are Memorizing, listening to music, reporting, code-switching and note-taking. For the future aspiration, students hoped that can be useful and one day would be the easier strategies for learning speaking at Pesantren. Whereas, students learning speaking at Pesantren also faced some challenges. The challenges that the students faced were lacking of vocabularies, nothing to say, miss pronunciation, and lack of confident.
