Abstract
Podcast is an adaptable digital audio file frequently utilized as an educational tool to enhance students' listening proficiency, particularly in English, accessible on various devices such as computers, MP3 players, or mobile phones. Meanwhile, the Spotify application, a widely used platform for listening to music and podcasts, offers students access to a range of captivating themes for English learning. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of podcast in spotify application on student’s listening comprehension at class X SMK PGRI 2 Kediri. The design of this study is a quasi-experimental design consisting of an experimental group and control group. The researcher used podcasts (Spotify) in experimental group and in control group used audiobooks to teach the students on listening comprehension. The participants of this study were 64 students from two classes. X DKV 2 as the experimental group consists 32 of students and X DKV 1 as the control group consists 32 of students from SMK PGRI 2 Kediri. The data are collected by using test, including pretest and posttest of writing. The outcomes of the pretest and posttest data were analyzed using Mann Whitney with SPSS 25 program since the data were not normal. The result of the data analysis showed that there is difference between the experimental group and the control group. The mean score of the experimental group was 80.94 and the mean of the control group was 62.50. The calculated showed results of the mean scores of students in the experimental class who were taught by using podcasts (Spotify) got higher scores than the scores of students in the control class who were taught by using audiobooks. The result of the Mann- Whitney test obtained a Z of -5.912 with a significance value of 0.000. The significance value is less than 0.05, so based on the decision-making criteria Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. It means that podcasts (Spotify) as media to teach listening ability is effective.
