Abstract

Speaking is the skill of confeying messages through spoken language. As the researcher used an approach at the classroom to stimulate students to learn language This study aims to improve students' speaking skills using an active team quiz strategy at SMPN 16 GRESIK. The team's active quiz strategy is to make it easier for students to speak English in the learning process. This research is Classroom Action Research. This research was conducted at SMPN 16 GRESIK which is located at Kedamean Gresik. The research period was from 15- 17 may, 2023. To be precise, it was carried out in the even semester of the 2023-2024 Academic Year. In class VIII-B there are 10 boys and 20 girls. The results of the research showed that, in the first cycle of testing, there were still shortcomings in improving students' speaking skills. Many students still did not understand the method used. The procedure of the research used two cycles, cycle 1 students got average score 73 and the students are 15 students (46,87%) are passed and 17 students (53,12%) didn’t passed this method. And for cycle 2 the researcher found there were 28 students (87%) success using this method and there were 4 students not passed using this method. Every cycle has four steps namely planning,action,observing,reflecting. After re-testing in the second cycle, there was an increase in students' skills and the strategy used was successful for class VIII students B SMPN 16 GRESIK
