Abstract

One of the people’s problems in doing communication is they do not know about doing visual communication, like communicating through a picture. Therefore, the research is aimed to explore the types of representational meaning and the most dominant type used in five educational advertisements from overseas university websites. This research uses descriptive qualitative method. The researcher uses herself as the main instruments. It employs representational meaning as the procedure of the research based on Kress and Van Leeuwen’s Visual Grammar. The researcher chose and selected five educational advertisements about promoting university. Those advertisements are taken from five overseas university websites which are included in the top 200 of World University Rankings based on Times Higher Education in the year 2019. The selected universities are University of Western Australia, Nanyang Technological University, University of Exeter, Emory University, and Calgary University. The finding of the research indicates two types of representational meaning, namely narrative and conceptual process. Additionally, narrative process consists of action process and reactional process. While conceptual process consists of analytical process and symbolic process. Furthermore, the most dominant type of representational meaning used in those five advertisements is narrative process. It shows action process with a frequency of 32 and the percentage is 45%. While reactional process also shows a frequency of 14 and the percentage is 20%.
