Abstract
Writing is an important skill in teaching and learning English process. Because writing needs some components‟ mastery, there are some problems related to students‟ ability in writing. The common problem that students often face when writing is the lack of English language vocabulary that make them feel writing is difficult subject. There are various ways to organize sentences in a piece of writing. One of them in the form of recount text. And the aim of the research is to find out the correlation between students‟ mastery of past tense and their writing ability in recount text. The research design of this study is correlational research. In this study, the researcher takes MAN 4 Kediri as a location of research. The researcher takes a sample from 5 classes with 175 students of the tenth grade of MAN 4 Kediri. They are from classes X IIK, X IIS 1, X IIS 2, X MIA 1, and X MIA 2. The researcher collects the data by using grammar test and writing test to the student. . For analyzing the data, the researcher uses SPSS 21.0. After collecting and analyzing the data, the researcher gets the result of this study. The total score of grammar test from 175 sample are : Mean : 92.040; Median : 93.000; Minimum score : 73.0 ; Maximum score :100.0 And for the score of writing test are Mean : 66.583 ; Median: 66.000 ; Maximum score : 79.5Minimum score : 52.5. After that, the researcher tries to test of normality, it shows to writing ability in recount text is 0.006 and variable of grammar test is 0.00. So, it can be concluded that both of data distribution are not normal. Because of both of data distribution is not normal, the researcher use Kendal tau-b to test the correlation and the significance value shows 0.000 it means that the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected.. To find out how strong the relationship between two variables, can be seen from the value of the correlation coefficient shows 0.481 which means the correlation between two variables was sufficient. Thus it can be concluded that there is a significant correlation between two variables.
