Abstract

The present research aims at developing supplementary reading materials for the tenth grade students of senior high school. The research problem is formulated as what suitable supplementary reading materials for the tenth grade students of SMAN 2 Kediri which the students are considered as generation Z who highly addicted by the internet. Research and Development (R&D) method adapted from Borg and Galls’ theory in 1983 with some modifications is the method used in this research. Through this research, the writer employed seven stages: (1) conducting need analysis, (2) developing materials. (3) getting expert judgment, (4) revision I, (5) field testing, (6) revision II and (7) final product. The subjects of the research were 30 students of X IIS 2 of SMAN 2 Kediri in the academic year 2018/2019 which consist of 14 males and 16 females. In the need analysis, a questionnaire to the students was distributed and an interview with the teacher was conducted. The data from needs analysis questionnaire were analyzed by looking up the percentage of each statement. Meanwhile, the data from the interview was interpreted. The result showed that the supplementary reading materials that they need are materials with a website basis. Then, the results were used as the basis to develop the materials. The product of the research was a set of web-based supplementary materials that developed based on the syllabus of K-13. In the validation result, the average value of the product was 84%. It means that the media is good enough. In the first revision, there are some revisions about the display and content of the website. Then, in the field-testing result, the students’ response is 87,7%. It can be concluded that the web-based supplementary reading materials namely www.bedebeam.com has got a good response as supplementary materials which help the students to supplement their English reading activities.
