Abstract

The purpose of this research is to know the politeness strategies used by main characters in Five Feet Apart novel by Rachael Lippincott and also to know the most dominant type of politeness strategies used by main characters in the novel. The research describes what kinds of politeness strategy used in a casual conversation by the main characters in the novel. This research was qualitative research approach because of some characteristic. First, the data of this study was from the words or utterances performed by the main characters in Five Feet Apart novel. Second, this study used human instrument: the researcher herself as primary of instrument for the data collection and data analysis. Third, the purpose of this study was to get understanding and deep information about politeness strategies in Five Feet Apart novel. The result of this research showed that there are four strategies found in casual conversation of the main characters. The strategies are bald on record, positive politeness strategy, negative politeness strategy, and off record strategy. From 55 utterances by the main characters, 5 of them identified as bald on record, 32 as positive politeness, 9 as negative politeness, and 9 as off record. It meant that 9% were bald on record, 58% as positive politeness, 16% as negative politeness, and 16% as off record strategy. Positive politeness strategy dominated the use of politeness strategy by the main characters during conversation. Positive politeness is used to minimize FTA to the hearer.
