Abstract

The objective of the research was to develop appropriate storybook based on character education for elementary school students in Kediri. This was a Research and Development (R & D) study. The procedure of the research followed the story book design process proposed by Borg and Gall (2003) with some modifications. The modified model consisted of four main stages: 1) Research Stage, 2) Development Stage, 3) Evaluation Stage, and 4) Finalization Stage. The subjects of the research are 37 fifth grade students of SD N 2 Burengan Kediri. The data of this study were in the form of qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data were obtained from the observation and interviews. The quantitative data were obtained from the questionnaires. The questionnaires were distributed to the experts and students in order to assess the medium. The quantitative data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics. The product of the research is a story book based on character education for Young learners. Based on the assessments and responses of the evaluators and the students, it can be concluded that the medium is appropriate to be used as an media to support literacy program especially to the fifth grade elementary school students. The score shown by the evaluators is 4,7.Meanwhile, the students gave 4,8 as the final score. The results showed that the story book is very good and recommended to be used as a medium to support literacy program for elementary school. The statement is supported by students‟ opinion given on the interview after the implementation. The data indicates that the medium is successful in making the students interested in literacy, helping them to mastering the vocabulary, and motivating them to learn English more, particulary reading.
