Abstract

The cover is the first page of the book which indirectly tell the content of the book. Therefore, analyzing the textbooks covers using representational meaning theory is one of appropiate ways to make the reader understand well about textbooks covers. This study aimed to find out the types of representational meaning and to review the most dominant types of representational meaning used in Indonesian Junior High School English textbooks covers. The research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The instrument of this study is the researcher herself. In this study, the researcher as the planner, data collector, analyst and reporter of the research finding. In addition, the researcher analyzed the five of Indonesian Junior High School English textbooks covers by using representational meaning which was purposed by Gunther Kress and Theo Van Leeuwen (1996). After analyzing the data, the researcher checked the validity of the research by doing an investigator triangulation. The finding shows that there are two types of representational meaning used in Indonesian Junior High School English textbooks covers, namely narrative process and conceptual process. Narrative process consists of three types, those are action process, reactional process and conceptual process. As narrative process, the conceptual process also has three types, classificational process, analytical process and symbolic process. The most dominant types of representational meaning used in Indonesian Junior High School English textbooks covers based on 2013 curriculum represented by conceptual process in the part of symbolic process which achieve to 45%.
