Abstract

This research was conduct in the second year students of SMP Al-Huda Kediri in the academic year 2011-2012. The purpose of this research was to find out wether and how the use of cluster word could improve the students’ writing skill. Based on the preliminary study, the researcher found some problems which were caused by the students and the teacher. They were as follows: (1) students’ ability to organize sentences was low. (2) they were difficult to develop their ideas and arranged sentences into a good text.. (3) their vocabulary was limited. (4) they lacked of grammar mastery. (5) their understanding of mechanic was low, etc. The causes from the teacher were: (1) the teacher still used traditional technic. (2) the teacher only gave fewer portion for writing. (3) the teacher did not give sufficient attention to teach them how to write a text in English correctly, etc. To overcome the problems, the researcher applied cluster word technique in teaching writing. This research is intended to describe how cluster word strategy can improve the writing skill of the eighth grade students of SMP Al-Huda Kediri. The design of study was collaborative classroom action research (CAR) which the researcher was assisted by a collaborative teacher (a colleague) in conducting the research. This action research was conducted in two cycles. The procedure of the research consisted of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. In collecting data, the researcher used observation, observation checklists, field notes, interview guide, and writing task. The procedure that used in implementing cluster word into writing consists of prewriting, drafting, revising, editing and publishing. The researcher used rubrick score and inter-rater to obtain valid score. From the result of the research shows that cluster word could improve the students’ writing skill. The students’ interest in writing improved after the implementation of the action of cluster word strategy.The students were active during the writing activities. The improvement was shown by the increase of the percentage of the students’ achievement in writing a recount text. The percentage of the students who scored minimal 75 in cycle 1 was 61.54% (24 students out of 39). In cycle 2 increased up to 77% (30 students out of 39). The percentage of the students’ achievement in cycle 2 was higher than in cycle 1. It shown that there was a significant improvement of the students’ writing ability after the research was conducted. Based on the result of the study, the researcher conclude that students’ writing skill can be improved through cluster word. Therefore, it is recommended that the teacher should apply cluster word in teaching writing.
